It's been all over the news. The high levels of domioc acid in our unusually warm waters have made the crab toxic-for now. Before you switch your Thanksgiving plans too drastically, keep in mind that things may change over the next month.
We spoke with Stan Bruno, a crab fisherman who we work with in Santa Cruz, and he thinks that if the upwells happen this autumn, as they do every year, cool, nutrient rich waters will cycle up and the crab will be toxin free in the next month.
Fortunately, one of our drop sites is at Monterey Bay Research Institute and we will be checking in regularly with them for updates.
